# What works and what doesn’t

> The hardware and features that work on the Switch OLED, and the ones that don’t.

iPadOS 26 and 27 both run. iPadOS 27 uses iPadOS 26's kernel, because Apple hasn't published the source of 27's yet.
As far as iPadOS can tell, the Switch is a 9th-generation iPad.

## What works

### Screen and controls

* The touchscreen, with multi-touch and palm rejection.
* The OLED panel at its native 1280×720. The interface is drawn at 1.6 pixels per point, so nothing gets scaled up
 and text stays sharp.
* Rotation, from the accelerometer and gyroscope.
* Brightness, including auto-brightness from the light sensor.
* The power and volume buttons.
* Joy-Con on the rails and over Bluetooth, and the Pro Controller, with the Home and Capture buttons. Pressing Home
 on a controller wakes the console, as it does on the Switch's own system.

### Graphics and media

* Metal, on the Switch's GPU. Core Animation, apps and games all draw through it.
* Hardware video decoding for H.264, HEVC (10-bit too) and VP9, and for HEIC photos.
* Hardware JPEG decoding and H.264 encoding.
* The speakers and the headphone jack, which notices when you plug something in, and Bluetooth headphones.

### Connections

* Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, which share one antenna and take turns on it.
* USB-C to a computer. A Mac sees the Switch as an iPad and can pair with it.
* USB 2 accessories on the USB-C port.

### Power

* The battery level, and charging over USB-C, from USB Power Delivery chargers up to 15 V too.
* Sleep and wake.
* The temperature sensors, which iPadOS uses to manage heat.

## What doesn't

### Apple services

Activation, Apple Account and iCloud, the App Store, and anything that needs FairPlay (Apple's DRM) are out of scope,
and there are no plans to change that. That means App Store apps and DRM-protected video don't work either.

### Not yet

* TV output through the dock.
* USB 3.
* AirDrop.
* Updating to a new release without erasing iOS's data.

### Speed

The Switch's CPU cores are several generations older than those in any iPad that runs iPadOS 26, so apps open and run
slower than they would on an iPad. JavaScript runs without its JIT compiler, which makes heavy websites noticeably
slow.
